FLAMINGOS .. part 3

NUTTY ABOUT NATURE

“In The Pink“, FLAMINGOS…..part 3

If you would like to add a Flamingo accent to your own home, there are pillows, glassware, salt and pepper shakers and, uh-huh, those iconic plastic lawn flamingos created by artist Don Featherstone back in 1957.

Recently, I’ve had my eye on flamingo bed linens…..I know, a bit much for a not-so-pink girl, but they’re so darn cute !  So far I’ve resisted because I don’t have a single room they would work in and I don’t have a little girl I can force them on.  Maybe some of you can use them in your guest room or recreational vehicle or stateroom ???  I’m so jealous if you can !

Now that I’m thinking about flamingos 24/7, I see them everywhere I go. I know I can use a candle or two in my house. They would fit right in with the decor on my back porch…… I don’t really need much convincing (hee, hee).

Give me a super-sweet, hand-embroidered flamingo cocktail napkin any day. What a hit they would be on my (I mean your) serving tray with pink lemonade coolers accented with flamingo stirrers and a pineapple wedge or a lime slice ! Yummy !

If you’re not a wash and iron type of girl or boy, here are some perfectly adorable paper cocktail napkins.

In case you’re wondering where to source those adorable Flamingo stirrers in the picture above, they are from The Party Boutique. Pretty cute, right?  Here are some others that are super cute as well !

And……how fab would they be with these vintage beverage glasses?

When it comes to your wardrobe, who wouldn’t want a jolly flamingo hat? Well, believe it or not,  I WOULD NOT WANT ONE !!!!  In fact, you will never catch me sporting a large bird on my head.

That being said, I could find myself wearing this over-the-top flamingo headband. Maybe for Halloween, New Year’s Eve or just to be wacky after a few too many tropical drinks.

More my style is a simple baseball cap with a tiny flamingo embroidered on the front. What better way to announce, in a subtle way, my affinity for “pinky“, which just so happens to be my mother’s nickname. No wonder I love flamingos so much !

Many years ago, I passed up a 1940’s vintage flamingo bakelite pin at my favorite antiques show. I have thought about it ever since. Today, I found a wonderful little company that makes antique reproduction jewelry using originals as molds. Their flamingo pin comes in 5 colors and is as adorable as the original.

If you are looking for a bit dressier piece, then this simple flamingo bracelet should be right up your alley (or should I say waterway?). It’s got a bit of bling, but is still in good taste.

Now, let’s talk about shoes and socks. Everyone loves tootsie covers because they look splendiferous whether you are at your goal weight or struggling with the same 10 excess pounds of fluff that just won’t say goodbye. (I did say 10, but 30 is more accurate…..mea culpa)

Anyway you slice it (the pineapple wedge, that is), adding a flamingo accent to your home or wardrobe is a sure bet to make you smile !

There are several ways you can help keep flamingos In The Pink We have a very special wildlife rescue park here in south Florida that saves wounded flamingos and nurses them back to health.  Since they are very social birds, they are cared for in a large, shallow-watered sanctuary with many of their compadres.  You can help by checking out their website (www.flamingogardens.org) or visiting Flamingo Gardens if you plan on a trip to Florida or are lucky enough to live here.

Other great flamingo-friendly parks include:

  • Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary in Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean
  • Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg, Florida
  • Sarasota Jungle Gardens, Palm Beach Zoo and Zoo Miami

Yes, I’m nuts for Flamingos and I hope that now, you are too !

See you soon for another fun and fab topic from our natural world.

‘Till next time …..BB
